You didn't say which part of Texas you live in. If it is a dry part, the swamp cooler can be quite effective. But if in a humid part, not so effective as an air conditioner.

If your shade cloth is no suspended above your roof, that can make a huge difference. When the cloth lays on the glass, the heat is transferred to the surface. I have a rack made of 2 x 2 about 12 inches above the roof.
