Default Under lights

Am I doing okay, or what should I do differently?

I'm a novice grower. I have no decent window that my wife will let me use, only a north facing that is also under a patio roof. I have my several plants under 13 watt (60 watt replacement) compact spiral fluorescent bulbs, about 8 to 10 inches above the leaves, 4 bulbs above each of 2 shelves that are about 14 inches wide and 36 long, housing 15 plants. Half the bulbs are soft white (2700K) and the others are daylight (6100K). They're not on a timer, yet, so I turn them on when I get up and off when I go to bed. The plants are dendrobium and phalaenopsis. They were grocery/home improvement store purchases that are no longer in bloom.

.....John
