If you are using Word to create your newsletter I would suggest downloading and using
Cute PDF. I have used it for years. It is a free download and once installed shows up as a printer that you select from the print dialog.
To lower the size of your document I would suggest right clicking on any image and select the Format Picture item in the popup menu. Find the Compress button in the dialog. Change the resolution to Web, check Compress Picture check box and the Apply to All check box (if you have cropped photos you can select the trip cropped images checkbox as well).
Most importantly do a Save As and change the name to reflect that this is for email or online (your images compressed might not be as crisp after compression).
This can take the size of the document down quite a bit. I've used this to take 49M Power Points down to under a Megbyte.
